It  acts as a tie beam  (that holds wall corners intact) as well as resist shear at that level -resist out of plane failure during Earth Quake. In Each Quake Zone it is strongly recommended to provide through lintel band BxD width full wall and ht atleast 150 mm ,4 bar 12 mm bottom & 8 mm dia top for economic .
